I served with the 20th Feb-Oct. 1969 Tour cut short due to Childbirth problems at home. In 1970 I was a menber of AFAT-4 advisory tean to VNAF, Bien Tuho, to install and help instruct aircrews to use the GAU2B minigunes in H model Hueys, Returned home in May '70,  Went TDY for 6 months to Hurlburt, July'70, as a gunner instructor. Returned hone (Sheppard AFB TX) in January '71/ and again assigned back to the 20th in June 1971- May '72 close of unit in Vietnam. I guess you could say I liked the "Hornets". I met and flew with  some great guys and it was an experience never to be forgotten. I was 30 years old on my first assignment which handicapped my off duty time. I stayed more or less in the background with a few of the guys or at the officers club at BMT.I could not have been assigned with a group of unselfish and dedicated warriors. I retired in 1977 and currently reside in North Richland Hills TX.  77years old and still kicking ...a littlt bit. Bill Dye Sr. Retired  USAF T/Sgt

I served with the 20th SOS at Nha Trang and BMT from May 68 to May 69. While I spent 25 years in the military, my time with the 20th was the best and the highlight of my career.  Everything else wained in comparison. I was just a young E-4 who served as a crew chief and gunner on a UH1F. I flew evey chance I got and accumulated 550 flighing hours and some 220 combat missions.  I knew the team needed me, and I loved what I did. The 20th inspired me to become an officer thanks to its brave officers and airmen.  As an Old Comrade of the 20th told me, "It was the last good time I ever had.",and so it has proven for me.  It was my greatest honor to have served you of the 20th Special Operations Squadron.

I was assigned to the 20th Helicopter on Feb 8, 1967, as an Administrative Specalist. At that time it was called the 20th Air Commando Squadron. Colonel John Amidon was the commander, at Nha Trang. The First Sergeant was Raymond Brick. After Brick left, Sgt. Lou Pellatro replaced him. During this time I met a lot of great men that I still vividly remember today. One of those was Colonel Thomas C. Bass from I think North Carolina. He has since passed. Another was Captain James McDaniels. That year was one of the best and worse in my life. I will always be proud to have been associated with this unit

I was part of the 14th field maintenance shop in Nha Trang.   I was sent to Camp Holloway in February or March of 1969 as a Jet engine mechanic (1 of 2), part of the ground crew that supported 20th SOS.   After a few weeks we flew to Ban Me Thout   I was there from March 1969 until we were sent to Tuy Hoa AB in August.     I only remember the last name of the other jet engine mechanic, Whitaker, and  wish that I could remember the other personel that were part of the ground crew. I don't consider myself a Green Hornet, just part of their support and very proud of it.

Major Joe Vallimont was my big brother.  He was a football team captain and catcher for the HS baseball team. He formed a rock band that played in our back yard. There was nothing that joe wouldnt try and he was known for never allowing bullies to do their bidding in his presence. I never knew what he did in the air force until he passed away, so I thought those of you that remember "Val" might of been curious. His father passed away in 2007 still having shrapnel in his shoulder from WW2. I was never in the armed forces but i dont take kindly to any who speak against them.  I thank you all for everything!!!

Remember flying into Laos from Udorn to part out a CH3 that had crashed up there...had to lighten it up so a marine h53 could sling the bones back for repair...spent a lot of time at Kon Thum/dak to and was awarded the DFC for a mission that went bad on 4 May 67 ...got an early out on 25 Oct 67...stayed in aviation as an A&P mechanic on fixed wing...about to test for my private pilot certificate at the age of 69!!  I'll fly myself around for a change!!  Pony rider Nov 66/Nov67. Best year of my career. Good people and a great mission we still can't talk about. Last I heard Al Devinie was in a home in Texas with dementia, he was my favorate pilot. I crewed 63-9689. As fling crewchiefs we had long days. Would love to hear from any of the old guys. Milt Ahonen is retired in Maine.

I flew with A/501st Rattlers at Bien Hoa.  On February 24, 1966 we flew with your CH-3 in support of the 161st NZ Artillery.  You hauled their howitzers from the field position to Bien Hoa while two Army Hueys made multiple trips for the tentage, ammo and other supplies.
Any one remember that mission?

Max Mullen (late '67 to late '68) passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. Burial to be at the DFW National Cemetery at 11:15a on January 22.  I have read his flight log and his service records.  He was extremely proud to serve with you.  On behalf of his surviving family, thank you for your bravery and your service, which continues with these pages. As an "Air Force" brat, these pages helped me better understand; and I am so thankful.

Hello to all Pony Express Squadron members.  I served as a pilot (2Lt/1Lt) with the Ponys; headquartered at Nha Trang and TDY to Udorn most of the time from August '66 to July '67.  This was a great and colorful unit with a storied history, and some of the greatest support personnel in the history of the Vietnam War.  I flew 56 combat missions, some of which I look back on and marvel that we survived.  I have pictures of some of the flights and locations and I hope to attend a reunion in the next couple of years.  Welcome home guys; and thanks for all the great support.  WH, Leawood, Kansas

I was in the 14thFMS Nha Trang mini-gun shop from 5-68 to 5-69 and did a 3 month TDY to 20thSOS in Bam Me Thout during March, April, and May of 69. I remember life as an airman on an Army  base was un-nerving to say the least. Wish I could remember some names but 43 years and lots of partying has taken it's toll. I do remember that my mini-guns never failed and I'm proud of that. God bless all that I served with.

I'd like to reunite it with it's owner. It has initials on it and some other identifying engravings. Contact me with a desription and the initials and I will return it. I was recently helping mom with some things and requested my dad's records.  After reading some of those, I took a chance and "googled" found your sight and a few others - and I just wanted to say "thank you" - daddy never spoke much of his time in Vietnam. The stories I've read and the pictures I've seen are appreciated!!

I was NKP Base Fuels QC from 4/68 - 3/69. We kept pretty busy, I was under every plane at NKP. I remember being taken by Jolly Green to a downed 02A just off the SW perimeter to fuel sample. No Crew, no blood, no fuel the plane looked pretty complete except a big hole in the Pilots side wing.
Does anyone remember this? I need info for VA.

Thank you all.

Hello All

Stationed at Nha Trang 68-69

Worked in maintenance on night shift, I remember working from the start of my shift and still there when the sun came up the nest morning.

I have many fond memories of the Ol'e 20th and the people in it.

I also remember the day Col. D and aircraft 158 were shot down, very sad day for sure.

I stayed with Helicopters, and recieved an assignment on CH-53's at NKP 72-73

Retired as a Msgt. in 1980 from the 41st ARRS at McClellan AFB, In Sacramento, still flying on the Ol'e H-53 when I retired.

Was part of the "Cowboy" take over at Hurlburt Field in 1980 for "Operation Honeybadger"

We Trained with Night Vision Goggles and just about wrote the book on H-53 Night / NVG Ops in that Summer of 1980 for a 2nd Rescue attempt into Iran after the first Failed Mission. Hostages released before we could act on a mission.

Sorry I don't remember many of you guy's, maybe that will improve as time goes by and more add their names to this site.

Take Care All, glad you made it, saddly some didn't we knew.

Went to Udorn TDY in 66' from Tan Son Nhut. Was on Jolly Green that crashed near NKP and was total loss. Not too sure on date; maybe spring of 66'. Quite an experience!! One that I'll never forget. Prior to departure from Udorn that morning I watched an F-101 crash on landing and the pilot barely got out in time.

Dec 67-Nov 68. I was one crew chief on 65-?6595 I think.  I thank the people for having this website. I have offered some pics to them and am waiting to hear back.
I saw one name I recognized. I guess a lot of us are still in hiding, or worse, now gone. We did fly a lot and party a lot.
Does anyone remember the Green Berets that came up from Nra Trang? They used to go into bars, jump up their backs on a table, bet who could stay there the longest, then wait on the locals to try and get them down.
I just had some more "Gomer Getters" cards made , I was down to my last one.
Well, gotta go, I want to see if the 21st Helicopter has a website. I want to say hello to NITNOY AIRLINES, like we used to every day.

Very Nice Website.  My father Arthur "Marty" Martinelli was with this squadron.  I don't know much about his history, but I know he is a silver star recipient.  He lives outside of Dayton, OH and still works out of WPAFB (C-17).  We are both going to try to make it to the reunion in October.

A wonderful web site. Dian and I are planning on being there.

You might want to know that Herb Zehnder is very ill in Fort Walton Beach. We flew together in the old 4485th, which became the 20th.
